HIGH SCHOOL HOOPS
The first of 3 regular season tournament weekends came and went just ahead of the Christmas Break all across Western Oklahoma. Elk City made their maiden voyage up to Woodward for the 6th annual Winter Classic. The Big Elks played tough in their 3 games, going 1-2 and falling in the 3rd place game to the Woodward Boomers 71-39. Tucker Garza was in double figures each game. The Elkettes won their first two and found themselves in the Championship Game on Saturday night against 6A Yukon. Elk City led for most of the first half but found themselves down 6 headed into the 4th quarter. The Brown and White surged back to within one with about 3 minutes left when Abby Brown gave them the lead for good….. Brown’s 3 made it 43-41. Elk City wouldn’t trail again in a 48-43 championship game win. Brown was named tournament MVP with 23 in the finals. Soph Campbell Garbarino was also named to the all tournament team.
Leedey hosted the 2nd annual So Canadian Classic. The brackets were filled with ranked teams across both class a and b. The Girls bracket came down to Hammon and AB. It was close early but the Lady Warriors ran away from the Lady Indians in the second half and won 81-31. Leedey avenged an earlier season loss to C-R in the 3rd place game with a 43-34 win. Okarche won the girls consolation bracket by dispatching Balko-Forgan 45-29. The defending Class A boys state champions were too much for the field this weekend. Okarche throttled Hammon 86-60 in the finals. Leedey edged AB 38-29 for 3rd. Balko-Forgan clipped Vici 41-40 in the consolation bracket.
Granite was the site of the Best of the Southwest Tournament this weekend. Navajo was the girls champ beating Granite in the finals 53-19. Navajo didn’t allow an opponent to score 20 points in any of the 3 games. The C-R JV squeaked by Erick 43-41 in OT of the consolation bracket finals. The boys final was a doozey between Granite and Erick. Ultimately the Panthers outlasted the Bearcats 73-69 to take the title.
Merritt traveled north to the MOoreland Holiday Classic. The Oilerettes dominated the week and took home the championship trophy with a 59-39 blow win in the finals against Waukomis. The Oilers won their first matchup then fell in two close ones including the 3rd place game against Waukomis 55-52
Canute was in Burns Flat for their invitational. The Trojanettes led by double figures at halftime of the title tilt against Ok Bible Academy. Unfortunately it was Ok Bible’s Trojanettes that controlled the second half and won 31-28. It wasn’t all bad news for Canute. The Trojans took home the championship trophy with an impressive 64-48 win over Hennessey.
Tonight will be a special night at Canute with Cordell in town. The new court will be dedicated and named Mike Maddox Court officially this evening ahead of the games. Coach Maddox won 543 games in his illustrious career, including the only state title in any girls’ sport in Canute history back in 1997. BEDLAM HOOPS
It was Bedlam inside the Paycom Center on Saturday night with men’s hoops getting together for the first time as non conference mates. Oklahoma dominated to the tune of a 15 point, 80-65 win. OU remained unbeaten and finds themselves #14 in this week’s AP Poll. OSU falls to 6-3.
THUNDER WIN; NBA CUP FINALS
The Ok City Thunder advanced to the Emirates Cup Finals out in Las Vegas on Saturday night. After trailing 42-41 at halftime against the Houston Rockets, OKC put 70 on the board in the second half to blow away Houston 111-96. SGA was fantastic with 32 points, 8 boards, 6 assists, and 5 steals. Isaiah Hartenstein chipped in with 21, his highest scoring output in 10 games with OKC. The Thunder play for the Cup tomorrow night against Giannis, Dame, and the MIlwaukee Bucks.
