Thousands of out-of-town dogs and their owners recently visited Elk City again.
The West Central Oklahoma Kennel Club Dog Show was held at the Elk City Convention Center Sept. 7-10.
The annual event brings 750 to 1,000 dog owners from several states, along with their furry friends, to town.
“Because it lasts four days, the dog show is our biggest yearly event,” said Convention Center Director Julie Brewer.
The 4-day affair features 350 to 500 entries per day, and each owner may enter several dogs in various categories in this American Kennel Club-affiliated competition.
The Convention Center is ideal for this kind of event. Its main hall and back room include 23,000 square feet of space for the more than 50 events that it hosts every year, including the dog show.
With 430 parking spaces and 75 RV hookups, there’s ample parking for both same-day and overnight guests.
Because the Convention Center hosts so many annual events that attract so many visitors, the facility’s economic impact is significant. The events themselves generate between $25,000 and $40,000 annually, but the thousands of out-of-town attendees also eat at Elk City’s restaurants, sleep in our hotels, purchase fuel here, and shop in local businesses.
One of these annual events is the fall festival, and this year’s will be held Sept. 16-17.
Having a craft show the weekend following the dog show requires a fast turnaround time to get the building ready.
“We will work our magic and quickly turn the Convention Center from furry to fabulous for the Fall Festival,” Brewer said.
