It was a busy day on Thursday for crews with the Elk City Fire Department and other fire departments in the area.

The day began when a semi-truck pulling a trailer knocked down power lines while exiting the Tractor Supply parking lot on West 3rd Street in Elk City. Elk City Fire Chief Kyle Chevenka said that not only was power disrupted for some PSO customers in the city, but all four lanes of 3rd Street in the area had to be shut down while crews worked to restore power.

Chervenka said that later in the afternoon, around 5 p.m., the Elk City Fire Department was dispatched to rural land near Hammon to assist in battling a grass fire started by lightning. He mentioned that after the crews had finished assisting with that fire, they were called out to help crews near Mangum with multiple grass fires that were also started by lightning.

Chervenka added that rain aided the fire crews in combating the wildfires and said that no structures were involved.
